EWA Position paper on the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive (UWWTD)

Full compliance with the current technical requirement of the Directive is now in sight, but pollution from chemical micropollutants, microplastics and some bacteria and viruses, which are not regulated in the UWWTD, remains a challenge.

We believe that there are good reasons for the European Commission to:

  • Extend the scope of pollutants in the UWWTD
    • Chemical micropollutants
    • Microorganisms
    • Microplastics
    • Storm water
  • Eliminate chemical micropollutants and microplastics at source
  • Specify new technical requirements in the UWWTD
  • Integrate Waste Water Treatment Systems in the Circular Economy and Climate Change Policies
  • Address governance issues to improve UWWTD implementation

The EWA Position Paper on the 2019 revision Water Framework Directive, the EWA urges the European politician to provide clarity, not only for the EWA but for all the involved stakeholders, on the strategy beyond 2027.

The EWA Position Paper presents its key perspectives which are imminent for the path going forward:

  • Ensuring continuation of the Water Framework Directive beyond 2017
  • Creating reliable foundations for water management – the need for interim targets
  • Implementing the “one out – all out” principle
  • Clarifying the non-deterioration principle
  • Needing to address all sources of pollution
  • Monitoring the process
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of the “phasing out” obligation
  • Harmonising the Water Framework Directive with other European regulations
